The Crane Project
Launched as an educational effort related to the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the chapter involved youth and others in the community in making 1,000 paper cranes in the memory of all victims of war and violence. The project was based on the Japanese tradition of making paper cranes as a means of mourning the tragedy of war and celebrating humanity's hope for peace. Scores of young people from numerous schools in the county took part in the project in each of these years. The paper cranes were sent to the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima to be displayed at the City's Peace Park. In the picture, Sarah Conway displays some of the cranes she made.
